Dangerous Hacker!

The story starts (I’m shortcutting here) with an [Please control your cussing] insulting everyone on the IRC channel. Most people there believed it was rather funny, but it got even more funny. For information: The dangerous hacker is called bitchchecker and the one being hacked and original author of the comments, who is talking here, is known as Elch. 127.0.0.1 is always the IP-adress of the computer you’re currently using, any request there will return to your computer.

What happened is clear: That guy entered his own IP-Adress in his mighty Hack-Tool and crashed his own PC. This way, the attack on my PC was a failure. I was already starting to think that I did not have to worry, but a good hacker never calls it a day. Two minutes later he returned.

There was a tension in the room… Would he manage, after these two failures, to crash my PC? I waited. Nothing happened. I felt relieve… Six minutes passed by until he prepared the next wave of attack. Being a Hacker, who usually cracks whole data centers, he knew what his problem was now.

He calls me girly and says only his grandma would use a firewall. I know that elder people are much more intelligent then younger, but I couldn’t let that rest. To see whether he really is a good hacker I lie and let everything as it is. I don’t have a firewall at all, only my router.

The guy is good: My CD-drive is allegedly deleted! Bitchchecker turned my ancient disk sucker into a burner! But how did he do this? I’ll have to ask him. Some encourage him. He himself is giving advice how to avoid the disaster on my hard drives.

Too late… It’s 20:22 when we get the last message of our hacker with the alias “bitchchecker”. We see that he has a “Ping timeout”. We haven’t seen him since then… must be the Daylight Saving Time.

SEATTLE–In a move that could rankle privacy advocates, Microsoft said Monday that it is adding the PC equivalent of a flight data recorder to the next version of Windows, in an effort to better understand and prevent computer crashes.

The tool will build on the existing Watson error-reporting tool in Windows but will provide Microsoft with much deeper information, including what programs were running at the time of the error and even the contents of documents that were being created. Businesses will also choose whether they want their own technology managers to receive such data when an employee’s machine crashes.

‘Think of it as a flight data recorder, so that any time there’s a problem, that ‘black box’ is there helping us work together and diagnose what’s going on,’ Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said during a speech at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference here.

For consumers, the choice of whether to send the data, and how much information to share, will be up to the individual. Though the details are being finalized, Windows lead product manager Greg Sullivan said users will be prompted with a message indicating the information to be sent and giving them an option to alter it, such as removing the contents of the e-mail they were writing when the machine crashed. Also, such reporting will also be anonymous.

‘Our stance on this is that the user is in control,’ Sullivan said. ‘In the consumer environment, you will be presented with a dialog that clearly gives you the choice whether to share the information and then also provides exactly what the detail is so you can parse character by character what’s being sent.’

Interesting article. As a computer professional I have to use Windows. I don’t always like it but I have to. My home systems mostly run flavors of Linux and BSD.

I agree and disagree with you about Unix. In the good old days with only a command line you had a very steep learning curve, but today with KDE, Gnome, etc. the curve is not any more than using Windows. If you computer comes with Linux, BSD, Unix installed and set up for you there really isn’t much difference between Windows and Unix. Companies that use Unix have a lot of stupid users who don’t know anything about computers or computer science. Most of them can’t program anything and never use an xterm or command prompt. They use Word Processors, Spread Sheets, Accounting programs and become proficient in those areas but don’t know much about their computer.

I think one of the biggest differences between the new free Unixes and Windows is that for casual users, that is students and home users, the additional tools are all free also. The biggest barrier to going further with Windows is it all costs a lot of money. You want to learn to
program for example. Well with Windows you have to buy the C++ Development Studio which costs around $600. That stops people pretty fast. It isn’t a problem for companies, $600 is just change for a big company. With Linux on the other hand the compiler is free and available. So are editors and debuggers and all sorts of other tools.

I think one of the major differences in philosophy today is Open Source versus Capitalistic Source. As a computer professional I had to buy a lot of Windows tools. If I were just a student who wanted to learn I couldn’t afford to buy those tools. I would have to a) steal them, b) use another OS, c) not learn.
